The Nintendo Switch is finally out. It looks to be a strong launch for Nintendo, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is wowing everyone. Gamers and reviewers seem to have very little negative to say about it.

However, there are other games to play on the Switch besides Zelda. If you’re able to tear yourself away from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, here are a few other quality offerings out on the system you shouldn’t overlook.

I Am Setsuna

  • Developer: Tokyo RPG Factory
  • Genre: RPG
  • Price: $39.99
  • eShop: Yes
  • Play If You Like: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy

Tokyo RPG Factory is a studio who’s primary mission is to make RPGs that are reminiscent of the Super Nintendo/PlayStation era of the ‘90s. I Am Setsuna is exactly that – an homage to Super Nintendo and PlayStation RPGs, especially Chrono Trigger.

The story is of a girl who’s destined to be sacrificed as an offering to keep her people safe. It features an all-piano score that fits the melancholy tone of the game. The battle system is very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger – and as anyone who’s played Chrono Trigger knows, that’s not a bad thing. Tokyo RPG Factory wears their influences on their sleeve. I Am Setsuna is a game that is intentionally not trying to reinvent the wheel, but celebrating the wheel as it existed 20 years ago.

Even though the game has been available on PS4 and Steam since last year, the Switch version of I Am Setsuna is the only portable version of the game since the Vita version was cancelled in the west. It’s a solid, portable RPG for the Switch you shouldn’t overlook.

Fast RMX

  • Developer: Shin’en Multimedia
  • Genre: Racing
  • Price: $19.99
  • eShop: Yes
  • Play If You Like: F-Zero

F-Zero fans have been waiting for a follow-up to the magnificent F-Zero GX on GameCube for almost 15 years now. That sequel hasn’t come, and Nintendo has given no sign at all that it’s a priority. Enter Shin’en Multimedia.

For all intents and purposes, Fast RMX is F-Zero. All that is missing is Captain Falcon and the other F-Zero characters. Even the announcer that starts the races and announces your final lap sounds almost exactly like the F-Zero GX guy. Since Nintendo refuses to make a new F-Zero game, Shi’nen has stepped in to fill the vacuum with Fast RMX for fans of high-speed, futuristic, anti-gravity racing.

Fast RMX features 30 tracks to race with your choice of 15 different vehicles. You’ll race through a variety of futuristic locales at very high speeds, set to driving techno music, all at a smooth 60 FPS. If you’re an F-Zero fan, you should definitely be looking at this one, as it’s likely the closest thing we’re going to get to a new F-Zero game for the foreseeable future.

Plus, the game is only $20. Consider Fast RMX a must-buy for Switch owners who like high-speed racing games, especially F-Zero fans.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

  • Developer: Yacht Club Games
  • Genre: 2D platformer
  • Price: $24.99
  • eShop: Yes
  • Play If You Like: Mega Man, retro platformers

Shovel Knight is one of the best indie games of the last ten years. It’s part Mega Man, part Duck Tales, part Zelda II, part….a variety of other NES-era games. It has retro-style and retro-gameplay mechanics for a new generation, but done in a way that creates something fresh and new.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove for Switch is the complete Shovel Knight package that includes the Plague Of Shadows and Specter Of Torment expansions. If you’ve already bought the game on another system, you can download it for free on Switch. If you haven’t bought it before, the whole game plus the two expansions will run you $25.

That may seem pricey for an indie game, but this isn’t just any indie game – this is Shovel Knight. Prepare to mete out some shovel-justice!

Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together!

  • Developer: SFB Games & Nintendo
  • Genre: Puzzle game, co-op
  • Price: $19.99
  • eShop: Yes
  • Play If You Like: Little Big Planet, Scribblenauts

I was going to try and keep the games on this list all third-party games, but Nintendo’s own Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together! is probably the biggest sleeper of the Switch launch so far.

Snipperclips is a puzzle-solving game where everyone controls a character made of construction paper. You have the ability to “snip” other players to create different shapes to solve puzzles. While it can be played as a single-player game, Snipperclips is best-experienced as a local co-op game.

Snipperclips seems especially designed to show off the Switch’s tabletop mode and how much fun it can be. There are also three competitive games that, while not part of the main game, are great for multiplayer as well.

For the $20 asking price, Snipperclips would make a great party game, especially with people who might not normally want to sit down and play a video game. There are over 40 different levels, plus the three competitive games. If you’re a local multiplayer gamer who owns a Switch, consider Snipperclips a must-buy.
