After withholding the sequel to Secret of Mana to non-Japanese audiences for more than 25 years, Square-Enix has decided that now is the time to bless us with its sequel. Seiken Densetsu 3 is now officially known in the west as Trials of Mana. Not only are we getting a properly localized version of Trials of Mana, Square-Enix is developing a full 3D remake of it for the Switch.

It’s funny listening to Square-Enix’s developers during the Nintendo Treehouse segment for Trials of Mana at E3. They say they ‘were not able’ to bring Trials of Mana to the west all these years.

Really? Were not able, or just didn’t want to be bothered? I’m thinking it might be the latter. Maybe from their personal perspective, they were not able to because it was an executive decision at Square-Enix, but it’s been a well-known thorn in the side of a lot of longtime Square-Enix fans that they never localized Seiken Densetsu 3 for the west. It seems the only reason they’re doing it now is because they want to sell us the 3D remake.

So now, if you want to own the original Mana trilogy on the Switch, you can have it for $40. Yep, $40 for a black and white Game Boy game, and two Super Nintendo games. Not exactly a great deal, but Square-Enix knows how badly their fans in the west want these titles.

All that being said though, the Trials of Mana remake looks impressive. This is another RPG from Square-Enix that uses real-time combat. As someone who loves action-RPGs, this is right up my alley. I can’t wait to see more from this game.
