You hear about stupid sports fans. Then you talk with one or two, and yeah, they are stupid. For instance, there are Seahawks fans out there who believe Pete Carroll, the winningest coach in Seahawks history, and a future Hall of Fame inductee, should be fired as the Seahawks head coach.
Their reasoning? He’s holding Russell Wilson back. Back from what exactly, I don’t know, since Russell Wilson is already a Super Bowl champion, an MVP candidate, and a future Hall of Fame inductee himself.
From what I can tell talking to them, because Carroll likes to run the football, he’s holding Wilson back, and therefore should be fired. According to them, the whole Seahawks offense needs to run through Russell Wilson. (It pretty much already does.) It’s not enough that Wilson threw for over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns this season and is a top-five quarterback. I guess he needs to be throwing for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns every year. Even if that means winning less in the process apparently. Making the playoffs almost every year isn’t good enough.

When I ask them who they would like to see replace Pete Carroll that would truly unlock Wilson’s potential, I get silence. When I ask again, no answer. It’s almost like they don’t know what they’re talking about, are clueless about football, take for granted how fortunate any team is to get a coach like Carroll, and to have a run of winning the Seahawks have been having.
For them, Carroll takes the blame for the Seahawks losses and gets none of the credit for their victories. When the Seahawks lose, they adopt the ‘see I told you so’ attitude. When the Seahawks win, they say Carroll had little to do with it. Their reasoning makes no sense.
When you point this out to them, the angry name-calling starts. At that point, it’s best to laugh at them and walk away.
So basically, they’re stupid. Or maybe not even really Seahawks fans in the first place and are oblivious to the years of mediocre and bad seasons the Seahawks had before Carroll, Schneider, and Wilson joined the franchise.
I know every sports team has fans like this. You see them, you talk to them, you hear them on sports radio sometimes. Little of it is based on anything resembling logic or common sense. Almost all of it is based on emotionalism. It becomes like trying to discuss politics or religion.
It’s why they’re fans and not coaches. Fans don’t get held accountable for bad decisions for their team. Coaches do.
The truth is, winning in the NFL is difficult. If your team is consistently winning, especially in the NFL, it’s something you absolutely should not take for granted. Seahawks fans have had it very good the last few years, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
They have a 68-year old head coach who runs around like he’s 25. They have a franchise quarterback who loves the team and city he plays for, and has openly said he wants to play in Seattle his whole career. They have a future Hall of Fame linebacker in Bobby Wagner. They have a Super Bowl trophy in their trophy case, along with numerous conference and division championships. If the Seahawks have another strong draft and shore up some issues on defense, they could be in a position to dominate the NFC again in coming years.

But yeah, let’s fire Pete Carroll, one of the two guys most responsible for putting this all together (the other being GM John Schneider). There is no available coach or assistant in the NFL I know of that the Allen family could replace Carroll with and be assured the team would be better off. Even among unavailable coaches, the list would be very small – as in, maybe one or two. Maybe. Carroll has basically been the Bill Belichick of the NFC since becoming the Seahawks head coach, but in a much tougher division.
The reality is, there’s a strong chance Carroll will retire a Seahawk. He’s almost 70, but looks like he could coach another ten years. He’s the most successful head coach the Seahawks have ever had and he just signed a new contract as head coach last year. His future looks bright and so does the Seahawks.
