I Am OZZY is Ozzy Osbourne’s autobiography and it’s interesting, entertaining, and quite funny. Ozzy has a lot of stories and the book is written in Ozzy’s voice, which it makes it even better. Almost the whole book focuses on his alcohol and substance abuse though, and the crazy things he would do while under the influence, which was pretty much all the time. The only part of the book that talks a lot about his music is the Black Sabbath era. Everything else is mostly about his growing up years, his family, and his lifestyle. I would’ve liked more stories about the music, but the book is well-written and hard to put down.

What was striking is that Ozzy never bragged about his wild antics outside of music that he’s done in his life. He sounds remorseful for almost all of it. He loves his family very much and some of what he did seems to really pain him when he talks about it in retrospect. The book was published in 2009, so most of his life is covered. Ozzy’s been having some serious health problems lately, but it sounds like he’s going to pull through and be able to perform again. I hope he does.

If you’re curious at all about rock’s most notorious figure, how he became the singer for the band that created heavy metal, and if all the stories told about him are actually true, check out I Am OZZY. It will make you laugh and cry and you’ll learn a lot about one of the most important figures in the history of rock music. It’s a great read.
