Outside of Pikmin 4, the first half of this Nintendo Direct was a snooze-fest while the second half was fire. Some of the biggest announcements of the stream were:
-
- Metroid Prime Remastered
- Pikmin 4
- Advance Wars: Reboot Camp 1+2
- Fantasy Life: The Girl Who Steals Time
- Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection
- Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The long-rumored Metroid Prime Remastered was announced. The screenshots look unbelievable. It’s not hyperbole to say it might the best-looking Nintendo game of all time. If Nintendo remakes all the Metroid Prime games to look this good (including Hunters), video games are going to be pretty much over. We’ve reached the pinnacle.
Pikmin 4 was nice, but didn’t show much new other than the dog mechanic. Otherwise, it just looked like more Pikmin, which isn’t bad.
Advance Wars Reboot Camp 1+2 finally gets a release date. Nintendo had indefinitely delayed it because they thought people would deem it insensitive to release it while the Ukraine war was going on, even though the game doesn’t remotely resemble real war. However, Nintendo didn’t show any gameplay or anything indicating it’s a game about battle tactics in the trailer, so maybe they’re still paranoid.
A new Fantasy Life is on the way from Level-5 with Fantasy Life: The Girl Who Steals Time
The first three Etrian Odyssey games are all coming to Switch with Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection.
Dead Cells already is as close to being Castlevania as a game can be without being Castlevania. The Return to Castlevania expansion makes it official with characters and music from the series.
The Direct ended with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This trailer was definitely better than the last one, but still doesn’t tell us much about the game. Nintendo isn’t tipping their hand yet, as it’s mostly cinematic with not much gameplay.
Overall, this was a strong Direct for Nintendo. The first two-thirds were mostly boring, but the last 15 minutes were very strong. Nintendo’s recommitment to the Metroid series is very encouraging to see. Metroid Prime Remastered looks jaw-dropping.
