Sony’s PlayStation Showcase events are devoid of any personality whatsoever. They just string together a bunch of game trailers and broadcast them. It gets the point across, but it’s very different from how Nintendo does their Nintendo Directs. That being said, some good games were shown at the latest PlayStation Showcase. Some of the standouts were:
-
- Phantom Blade 0
- Sword of the Sea
- Teardown
- The Plucky Squire
- Metal Gear Solid Master Collection
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
- Towers of Aghasba
- Final Fantasy XVI
- Alan Wake II
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage
- Granblue Fantasy: Relink
- Tower of Fantasy
- Dragon’s Dogma II
- Marathon
- Spider-Man 2
Of particular note is the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection. If Konami is serious about bringing the Master Collection to “the latest platforms”, it’s hard to imagine they would just ignore a 120 million user base. The Switch can easily run all those games.
Foamstars might be the most blatant ripoff of a Nintendo property since Kinect on Xbox aped Wii Sports. It’s hard to believe Square-Enix is publishing it.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink looks fantastic, and it should be getting more buzz. At first, it looked like it might be Dragon Quest XII.
Assassin’s Creed is going back to the Middle East with Mirage, this time in 8th century Baghdad.
Final Fantasy XVI is looking more like a character action game than a role-playing game.
Spider-Man 2 looked very cinematic and very amazing.
Altogether, a good showing by Sony close to when E3 would’ve been this year. We may not get a Nintendo Direct anytime soon, but we’ll see if Microsoft has anything to show in the coming weeks.
