Joy-Con drift has been the biggest complaint users have had of the Switch hardware, and maybe the biggest hardware flaw Nintendo has ever had in any of their systems in their history. Third-party controllers like NYXI’s Wizard Wireless Joypad for Switch seem to have solved the issue with hall-effect analog sticks that eliminates Joy-Con drift entirely. Now, it looks like Nintendo may have developed their own version of hall-effect sticks, presumably for the Switch successor.

It’s hard to understand how a video game hardware manufacturer who has had analog sticks in their consoles since 1996 could’ve botched the sticks in the Switch so badly. They feel thin and flimsy and don’t hold up well to heavy use without drifting. I imagine the Joy-Con drift issue was embarrassing for Nintendo given they’ve been offering free repairs for it for years now. They don’t want a repeat for the Switch successor. Hopefully, hall-effect technology will be the solution.

A patent filed by Nintendo suggests that they’re working on Hall Effect style joysticks for the Switch 2 that would eliminate stick drift almost entirely.

Years after the release of the Nintendo Switch, more rumors of a successor to the popular handheld came to light on September 7, 2023.

On that same day, Nintendo received a series of patents in the US detailing various aspects of the new console, and one in particular stands out the most.

In one filing, Nintendo’s patent details a joystick that uses a magnetic field to send its movement through the controller, which is almost definitely a hall effect joystick.
