Back in 2020, a decompiled native PC port of Super Mario 64 was released that took years to make. This didn’t come from Nintendo, but from the PC mod community. A decompiled port of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is now also in development for PC.
However, a new tool, developed by modder Wiseguy, allows near-perfect PC ports of Nintendo 64 games to be made in a matter of days instead of years, complete with high framerates, high resolutions, and widescreen support. He’s finished a PC port of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and claims that this tool will allow almost the whole Nintendo 64 library to be ported to PC natively with these same features. His recompiling tool also allows further improvements to be made such as improved textures and ray-tracing in the future.
Since these programs don’t use any actual game assets, these ports are perfectly legal, and Nintendo, in spite of cracking down on Switch emulators lately, has done nothing to stop these ports and tools from being made and flourishing. In fact, Nintendo may be taking notes on what Wiseguy and this community are doing, as this could lead to better Switch ports of Nintendo’s classic games, since all of Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 ports on the Switch for Nintendo Switch Online use emulators to run.
You can download the PC port of Zelda: Majora’s Mask here. You can download the Nintendo 64 recompiler here. Also, check out Wiseguy’s Majora’s Mask trailer and the video further explaining how this porting process works below. This is a big deal for classic game preservation.
