After seven years of waiting since its initial announcement, Metroid fans finally got their first look at Metroid Prime 4, now called Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

The trailer starts out on an open battlefield, but soon cuts to on-foot traversal with Samus scanning a dead foe, then to Samus in her familiar morph ball, then to battling what look to be Space Pirates, and culminates in a surprise appearance from….well, you can watch the trailer yourself to find out. Fans of Metroid Prime Hunters will be pleased.

Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced at E3 2017 with nothing but a logo. The game was rumored to be developed by Bandai-Namco and another outside developer. However, in January 2019, Nintendo announced that development of the game was being started completely over, this time with Retro Studios as the developer, who made the original Metroid Prime trilogy for Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Wii in the 2000s. After the announcement, Nintendo didn’t say or show anything about Prime 4 for five years other than it was still in development and that development was progressing smoothly. Until now.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is set to release on Nintendo Switch in 2025, but it will almost assuredly release in some form on Nintendo Switch 2 as well. Whether it’s a simultaneous release similar to what Nintendo did with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releasing both on Wii U and Switch in 2017, we’ll have to wait until next year to find out. In the meantime, Metroid fans can rest easy having seen the game and knowing the long wait is finally almost over.
