Yooka-Replaylee is remake/remaster/do-over of Playtonic Games’ 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee, which released in 2017. It’s a separate release that’s supposed to fix everything that was wrong with the original game.
What was wrong in the original game? I’m not going to go into the details here, but Yooka-Laylee, while retaining the spirit of classic 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie in its characters and writing, was basically an unfinished and unpolished experience in its content and mechanics. You can read my full review of Yooka-Laylee here if you’re interested in the specifics.
Playtonic is asking 3D platformer fans to give them another chance with Yooka-Replaylee, and is promising more moves, better platforming, more challenges and things to do, and more collectibles. As disappointed as I was in Yooka-Laylee overall, I’m willing to give them that chance, and I know I’m not alone. I want Yooka-Replaylee to be great: better controls, better camera, better pacing, and lots and lots of collectibles. I want to believe.
Yooka-Replaylee will release sometime in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and you can check out the new overview trailer below:
