When Ghost of Yotei was first revealed last year, there was some controversy that developer Sucker Punch had decided to move on from Jin Sakai’s story in Ghost of Tsushima to another protagonist – a female protagonist. There were even rumors that Sony was uncomfortable with the direction. Sucker Punch likely put any controversy to rest with their recent State of Play deep-dive of Ghost of Yotei.

The female protagonist in question is Atsu, who the people of Ezo believe is an ‘onryo’ – an angry vengeful spirit. It’s a revenge story in which Atsu is hunting down a gang of thugs called the Yotei Six for what they did to her family sixteen years earlier. Just like its predecessor, Ghost of Yotei places a massive emphasis on exploration, player choice, taking your time through your adventure, stealth, and brutal combat. Atsu also has a bounty on her head, and she can hunt down her own bounties with a number of melee and ranged weapons that are at her disposal. All in a beautiful world that’s designed to make you feel like you’re in your own Japanese samurai film.

Ghost of Yotei will feature a full japanese voice-track with lip-synching and subtitles. The Kurosawa black-and-white mode will be returning, in addition to a combat mode inspired by Takasi Mikke, director of 13 Assassins, for closer combat and more mud/blood splatter. Also, Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe has contributed some lo-fi music tracks for the adventure.

Ghost of Yotei releases for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Check out the entire State of Play deep-dive below:
