We were promised earlier this year by Team Cherry that Hollow Knight: Silksong would release in 2025, and at Gamescom, they didn’t disappoint. Not only did we get a release date, but a brand new trailer.

Much like the original game, Silksong will have a giant world to explore with 200 different enemies and….“40 bosses” (*wink wink). You’ll play as Hornet, the guardian of Hallownest, who made brief cameos in the first game. Silksong will have a whole new world to explore with new weapons, skills, and power-ups to attain. It uses the same hand-drawn art-style, with Christopher Larkin returning as the composer. Also, it sounds like there might be some crafting as well.

If you’re unfamiliar with the original Hollow Knight, it’s a 2D action-adventure platformer (Metroidvania) from a small developer in Australia called Team Cherry. You can read my review of it here, but in short, it’s a superb, exceptionally well-made platformer with beautiful hand-drawn art, a fantastic score, a colossal world to explore, and combat that is razor-sharp with serious challenges that will test your skill as you get deep into the world. I gave it my highest possible recommendation in my review. It’s the best game in its genre, and should be played by anyone who loves Metroidvanias.

Also, it’s a fantastic value. At full price, Hollow Knight is only $15.

At this point, it can probably be said that Silksong is the most anticipated indie game of all time. The hype and anticipation for it is sky-high right now and is similar to what we see from a AAA release, and most of it, if not all of it, has been grassroots excitement from the fans. No marketing budgets from publishers or executives, and no commercials. Just three guys making their game and not releasing it until it’s finished.
