We’ve seen the Soulslike genre in 3D and 2D action-adventure titles, but we haven’t seen much from first-person shooters, or games in the first-person perspective. Valor Mortis from developer One More Level (Ghostrunner, Ghostrunnier II) is trying to change that with a dark, dystopian take on 19th century France set during the Napoleonic era. You play as a French soldier who comes back from the dead to a France overrun by a mysterious plague. The gameplay is in first-person and seems to revolve around sword combat to a large extent, with a big emphasis on your ability to parry and dodge while watching your stamina. Ranged combat also comes into play with guns and a supernatural ability to summon fire out of your left hand. The swordplay is brutal with tons of blood for every foe that’s dispatched. However, the game is a Soulslike RPG so it’s likely the game will have bite, and you’ll be dying a fair number of times. We’ll likely be hearing more about Valor Mortis next year as it gets closer to release.
