One of the surprise announcements during the latest Nintendo Direct was that both Super Mario Galaxy games are coming to Switch as part of Mario’s 40th anniversary celebration. Nintendo has made some improvements to the visual fidelity, as both games will be playable in 4K on Switch 2. For Switch, they run at 1080p/60 FPS. Some extra texture work has been done as well. They will also have extra storybook chapters from Rosalina that weren’t in the original Wii versions.
The first Super Mario Galaxy game is already playable on Switch if you bought Super Mario 3D All-Stars when it was available during Mario’s 35th anniversary. However, Nintendo only sold that collection for a limited time, meaning you can’t buy it anymore.
However, the price of these remasters has raised a few eyebrows, as Nintendo is selling both games in a bundle for a full $70. Or you can buy them individually on the eShop for $40 each. Keep in mind, these games came out in 2007 and 2010 respectively on the Wii, so they’re between 15-20 years old at this point. That seems a bit much to some for two Wii platformers. However, for those that have been paying attention, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Nintendo re-released Donkey Kong Country Returns, a 2D platformer that originally released on Wii in 2010, on Switch as a full $60 game.
If you’ve never played the Super Mario Galaxy games, they’re arguably the two best games on the Wii, and two of the greatest 3D platformers ever. They’re both fantastic and most likely worth the $70 price point if you’ve never played them before.
The Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle releases for Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 on October 2, 2025. Check out the announcement trailer below:
